Compiled from ten short films shown in festivals the world over, Boys on Film: Bad Romance showcases the best in contemporary gay short films. From New Zealand, to Israel, South Korea and Canada, Boys on Film takes a wide, truly international look at gay relationships.
Thematically, the short films are linked together by having at least one gay character in them. Besides that, they explore a multitude of themes, leading the audience through the spectrum of gay experiences. In Mirrors (2007), Julien (a young Xavier Dolan) is trying to make sense of his sexual orientation. In Curious Thing (2009), Jared knows that he is gay but only comes out of the closet when he meets Sam, who is straight. But where can the two men go from there? Seok and Min-soo are trying to have a night alone together in Just Friends (2010) when they are interrupted by Min-soo’s mother and don’t know what to tell her in regards to their relationship. Cake and Sand (2010) shows the sad denouement after the death of the sexual spark in a relationship, and asks whether love is more important than sex.
Not all of the pictures focus primarily on homosexuality, rather, on humanity. Often, it’s not really made a point off, such as in The New Tenants. The two new tenants are both male and in a relationship and living together, but the story revolves not around sexual preference, instead on the characters in their building and whether the men can avoid being killed by a heroin addict. It’s always enjoyable to see gay cinema that’s about more than saying “I am gay!” on a big screen.
All ten of the films employ different methods to present their story on screen. In The Strange Ones (2011), Radcliff and Wolkstein use a cold and muted colour palette, draining the scenes of brightness to heighten the mystery between the three characters. Cake and Sand uses very dark shots, some might say too dark, to conceal and accentuate a certain confusion, combined with the intimacy of darkness, and mixes them with bright daylight shots filmed on an idyllic beach. Mirrors also uses natural settings; Julien is often seen swimming in the lake and walking amongst trees as he figures himself out.
Boys on Film Bad Romance ReviewSkimmed from the top film festivals, all ten of the shorts in Boys on Film employ top rate actors to fill the well-written roles. All of the issues explored within the collection are done so with sensitivity and subtlety, much to the credit of the often young performers. Bad Romance is the seventh in the series of Boys of Film, and a great collection of shorts that will explore more than gay romance like the title suggests, but humanity at large. The themes explored will resonate with an audience regardless of sexual orientation, and everyone can appreciate film making at this high a level.
